Where we can
Continuity matters more for long-term risk than for a one-off illness.
What we cover
These are the things people most often book us for.
Blood pressure, cholesterol and cardiovascular risk, including where a family history changes the picture.
Screening for type 2 diabetes, and the metabolic questions that sit alongside it.
Changes in urinary habit, and a proper conversation about whether prostate testing is right for you.
A full-body check with dermoscopy, which matters more here than almost anywhere in the world.
Low mood, stress, sleep and alcohol, and a plan that does not begin and end with a script.
Sexual function, fertility and sexually transmitted infection testing, discussed plainly.
Persistent cough, breathlessness and smoking-related concerns, with lung function testing on site.
A structured review of your overall health rather than the single thing that brought you in.
In detail
Men in Australia go to a GP less often than women do, and tend to arrive later once they do go. The practical effect is that things which are straightforward to manage early — blood pressure, cholesterol, a changing mole, blood sugar — get found further along than they needed to be.
None of that is about willpower. It is mostly about not having a regular GP, not knowing what is worth an appointment, and not wanting to take up a slot for something that might be nothing.
So this page is a list of things that are worth an appointment. If something on it sounds like you, that is enough of a reason to book.
In detail
Western Australia has among the highest rates of skin cancer anywhere, and outdoor work and time on the water are ordinary here rather than unusual. A full-body check takes time to do properly, which is why it is booked as its own appointment rather than added to the end of another one.
Dr Perry Lee holds a Diploma in Dermoscopy, and both he and Dr Ashwin Menon have skin cancer medicine among their clinical interests.
In detail
Whether to have a PSA blood test is genuinely a decision rather than a formality. The test can find cancers early, and it can also point at things that were never going to cause harm, which leads to further tests and worry.
That trade-off shifts with your age, your family history and your own view of it. It is worth ten minutes with a GP who will actually explain both sides rather than handing you a form or waving it away.
If you have noticed a change — a weaker stream, going more often, getting up at night — that is a separate matter and worth an appointment regardless of where you land on screening.
In detail
Men are less likely to raise low mood with a doctor and more likely to describe it as tiredness, irritability, poor sleep or drinking more than they used to. All of those are reasonable ways to open the conversation.
A GP appointment is a normal place to start. It does not commit you to anything, and a plan can be as practical as sleep, alcohol, exercise and a follow-up in a fortnight.
| If you need | Ask for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A full skin check | A long appointment | A head-to-toe check needs more than a standard slot to do properly. |
| Blood pressure or cholesterol review | A standard appointment | Bring any home readings you have taken. |
| To talk about prostate testing | A standard appointment | It is a discussion, and there is no need to have decided beforehand. |
| Mental health | A long appointment | Say it is a longer conversation. You do not have to say what about. |
| A general check with nothing specific wrong | A health assessment | Tell reception your age — assessments are structured differently over 45 and over 75. |
| Several things at once | A long appointment | Better than trying to fit three problems into one standard visit. |
How we work
Most of what shortens men's lives responds to exercise as much as to medication, and a plan you actually start beats a referral you never chase.
Your GP and our exercise physiologist are down the same corridor, so a plan does not stall on logistics.
A chronic disease management plan can bring Medicare-rebated exercise physiology into your care.
What happens in allied health comes back to your GP, so nothing has to be explained twice.
What happens
Ring (08) 6147 6547 and say roughly what it is about, so we book the right length. You do not have to go into detail.
Your Medicare card, any current medicines, and any readings or results from elsewhere.
If three things have been bothering you, say all three at the start rather than saving one for the door.
A test, a referral, a plan, or a date to come back — so it does not drift for another two years.
Their qualifications, and what each of them focuses on.
Clear answers to the practical details patients need before booking or visiting the practice.
No. You can book a GP appointment here without a referral from anyone. Ring reception on (08) 6147 6547 and say roughly what it is about so we can book the right length of appointment.
More common questionsNot at all, and it is a common way to start. A first appointment is mostly listening — what has changed, what you have noticed, and what your family history looks like. Nothing about it requires you to have kept up.
More common questionsThat is a genuine decision rather than an automatic yes, and it depends on your age, your family history and how you weigh the trade-offs. A PSA test can find cancer early and can also flag things that would never have caused harm. It is worth a conversation with a GP before deciding either way.
More common questionsIt depends on your skin type, your sun exposure and whether you have had anything removed before, so it is something to agree with your doctor rather than a single rule. Book a check whenever a spot is new, changing, itching or bleeding, regardless of when your last one was.
More common questionsYes. Dr Ashwin Menon and Dr Perry Lee are both male GPs, and Dr Lee has men's health among his clinical interests. Ask reception when you book on (08) 6147 6547.
More common questionsIt is a longer, structured appointment that looks at your overall health and risk rather than one specific problem — heart, diabetes, lifestyle, mood and screening. Assessments are structured differently for people over 45 and over 75, so tell reception your age when you book.
More common questionsYes, and it is an ordinary part of general practice. Sexual function, fertility and testing for sexually transmitted infections are all things to raise with your GP. Book a standard appointment and say it is a private matter if you would rather not give reception the detail.
More common questionsWe are not advertising these yet — the practice has not confirmed which occupational medicals it will offer from opening. Please ring reception on (08) 6147 6547 to ask before booking one, rather than making the trip on the assumption.
More common questionsBook online with a GP, or call reception for exercise physiology.
