  • Metabolic health

Exercise as part of managing conditions like type 2 diabetes, alongside your GP.

  • Injury prevention

In detail

What does an exercise physiologist do?

An accredited exercise physiologist prescribes exercise as a treatment. Where a personal trainer builds fitness, an exercise physiologist works with injury, surgery, pain and long-term conditions, and holds a university degree and ESSA accreditation to do it.

In practice that means an assessment first, then a program written for your body and your week rather than a generic set of exercises. It is progressed as you change, which is the part that makes it work.

Clyve has more than a decade of clinical experience across hospital rehabilitation, aged care, private practice and occupational rehabilitation, and consults in English and Mandarin.

Clinical Pilates and hands-on treatment

Alongside exercise physiology consultations, Clyve runs clinical reformer and mat Pilates one to one, not as a class. That means the session is prescribed for you and supervised the whole way through.

He also offers sports massage, dry needling and myofascial release, which are used as part of a program rather than instead of one.

Booking, fees and funding

Clyve is on the same online booking system as our doctors, so you can book him directly and pick your own time.

If you are not sure what to book, or whether exercise physiology is the right fit for what is going on, email Clyve on [clyve@thorpestreethealth.com.au](mailto:clyve@thorpestreethealth.com.au) and he will answer it himself. For anything else, reception is on (08) 6147 6547.

Fees, rebates and the bulk billed option are set out in full on the [fees and billing page](/fees-and-billing/), including which situations attract a Medicare rebate and which do not. They are published in full because the clinic asked for them to be.

How we work

Your GP and Your Exercise Physiologist, One Building

Most people referred to an exercise physiologist go somewhere else, and the two never speak again. That is the thing this practice was set up to avoid.

  1. Down the corridor

Clyve works in the same building as the doctors, so a referral does not become a trip across town that never happens.

  2. One plan

A chronic disease management plan written by your GP becomes a programme you actually start, rather than a letter you are left holding.

  3. One set of notes

What happens in the exercise physiology room comes back to your GP, so nothing needs explaining twice.

What happens

What happens at your appointment

  1. Book with Clyve

Book online and pick a time that suits, the same way you would with one of our doctors.

  2. Bring what you have

Any referral or plan from your GP, scans or specialist letters, and clothes you can move in. None of it is essential for a first visit.

  3. Assessment first

What is going on, how long it has been going on, what you can currently do without aggravating it, and what you actually want to get back to.

  4. A programme built around that

Written for your body and your week rather than handed out as a generic sheet, and progressed as you change.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the practical details patients need before booking or visiting the practice.

No. You can book without one. A referral from your GP under a chronic disease management plan is only needed if you want a Medicare rebate, so it is worth asking your doctor whether a plan suits you before you book.
